The “STEVE” sculpture is inspired by the real-life, aurora-like phenomenom discovered and nicknamed by aurora photographers and citizen scientists in Alberta in 2016. Later, the “STEVE” placeholder name was adjusted by expert researchers to a backronym: Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement. STEVE is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that appears in photographs as purple and green vertical light streaks in the sky. The naked eye may see a vertical band of white and purple.
